Developing Knowledge, Confidence and Life Skills

At River Tyne Academy, Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) and Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) form a central part of our Personal Development curriculum. We believe that these subjects provide pupils with the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to make informed decisions, build positive relationships, and lead healthy, safe, and fulfilling lives.

As an alternative provision, we recognise that many of our pupils have faced challenges that may have impacted their education, wellbeing, and personal development. Our PSHE and RSHE curriculum is designed to support pupils in understanding themselves, managing life’s challenges, and preparing successfully for adulthood.

Our Curriculum

Through engaging and relevant lessons, pupils explore a range of topics that reflect the realities of modern life and help them develop the skills needed to thrive both now and in the future.

Key areas of learning include:

  • Mental health and emotional wellbeing
  • Healthy and respectful relationships
  • Online safety and digital citizenship
  • Physical health and healthy lifestyles
  • Personal safety and risk management
  • Diversity, equality, and inclusion
  • British Values and citizenship
  • Financial education and economic wellbeing
  • Careers and preparation for adulthood
  • Consent, relationships, and sexual health
  • Rights, responsibilities, and safeguarding

Lessons are delivered in a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment where pupils are encouraged to ask questions, express their views, and engage in meaningful discussion. Learning is tailored to meet the needs of our pupils and reflects both local and national priorities.

We also enhance our curriculum through assemblies, enrichment activities, awareness events, visiting speakers, and partnerships with external organisations, providing pupils with real-world experiences and expert guidance.

The Impact

Our PSHE and RSHE curriculum helps pupils develop the confidence, resilience, and understanding needed to navigate the opportunities and challenges of modern life. Pupils learn how to keep themselves safe, maintain healthy relationships, manage their wellbeing, and make informed choices about their future.
