Health & Wellbeing

At River Tyne Academy Gateshead, we recognise that positive health and wellbeing are fundamental to successful learning, personal development and future success. Our Health and Wellbeing curriculum is designed to support pupils in developing the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to lead healthy, safe and fulfilling lives.

We understand that many of our learners have experienced challenges that may have impacted their education, relationships and wellbeing. Our curriculum therefore places a strong emphasis on helping pupils build resilience, self-esteem and emotional literacy, enabling them to better understand themselves and manage the opportunities and challenges they may encounter.

Through a combination of physical activity, personal development and wellbeing education, pupils are encouraged to develop healthy habits that support both their physical and mental health. We provide a safe and supportive environment where young people can explore important topics, build positive relationships and develop strategies to maintain their wellbeing.

Our curriculum promotes active participation in a range of physical activities that help pupils develop confidence, teamwork, coordination and perseverance. Activities are carefully planned to be inclusive and accessible, ensuring that all learners can experience success and enjoy the benefits of being active.

Alongside physical wellbeing, pupils learn about a wide range of topics that support healthy lifestyles and positive decision-making, including:

  • Mental health and emotional wellbeing
  • Healthy relationships and communication
  • Physical health, exercise and nutrition
  • Personal safety and risk management
  • Online safety and digital wellbeing
  • Managing change and transitions
  • Building resilience and self-confidence

We believe that wellbeing is about more than physical health. It is about helping young people develop a positive sense of self, strong relationships and the confidence to make informed choices about their future. Through meaningful discussions, practical experiences and opportunities for reflection, pupils are encouraged to take responsibility for their own wellbeing and understand how they can seek support when needed.

Through our Health and Wellbeing curriculum, we aim to empower every pupil to develop healthy habits, positive relationships and the confidence to thrive both during their time at River Tyne Academy and beyond.
