Promoting Respect, Equality and Understanding

At River Tyne Academy, we are committed to creating an inclusive environment where every pupil feels valued, respected, and able to be themselves. As part of our Personal Development curriculum, pupils learn about the protected characteristics identified within the Equality Act 2010 and develop an understanding of the importance of equality, fairness, and respect for all. 

We believe that preparing young people for life in modern Britain means helping them to understand and celebrate the diversity that exists within our communities and wider society. Through PSHE, assemblies, enrichment activities, and everyday school life, pupils are encouraged to explore different perspectives, challenge stereotypes, and develop empathy for others. 

Our curriculum helps pupils to understand the protected characteristics, including: 

• Age 

• Disability 

• Gender reassignment 

• Marriage and civil partnership 

• Pregnancy and maternity 

• Race 

• Religion or belief 

• Sex 

• Sexual orientation 

Through age-appropriate learning and discussion, pupils develop an understanding of their rights and responsibilities, as well as the importance of treating others with dignity and respect. They learn how discrimination can affect individuals and communities and are encouraged to challenge prejudice and promote inclusion. 

The Impact

By learning about protected characteristics, pupils develop the knowledge, confidence, and understanding needed to build positive relationships and contribute to an inclusive society. They gain a greater appreciation of diversity and learn to respect the experiences, beliefs, and identities of others.
