Admissions & Referral Process

Academies in the River Tees Multi-Academy Trust (RTMAT) work in partnership with local schools to provide education for pupils who, because of exclusion, illness or other reasons, would not otherwise receive suitable education.

Admission to one of our academies may be via the Local Authority or directly from schools/academies. Referrals will also be considered from neighbouring Local Authorities.

Referrals must be received on our standard referral form, which can be accessed on our website and must be accompanied by relevant supporting documentation. All referrals are considered by an admissions panel and if deemed appropriate, a period of assessment is offered to establish whether one of our academies is able to provide the support required to meet the pupil’s individual needs.

Upon entry to RTMAT all students, regardless of age, key stage or site, complete the initial assessment process. The process has two models – a short assessment and an extended assessment for those students who require a more detailed assessment.

Quite simply, the assessment process allows us to introduce the student to RTMAT and break down any barriers to learning. The students have the opportunity to settle into the academy at a gradual pace over a number of sessions during which they complete a range of assessments . These allow us to identify any gaps in learning, any unidentified SEND issues and provides data for key teaching staff to enable work and intervention to be set according to the individual students needs.

The assessments are predominantly online through GL Assessment and include reading, spelling, a dyslexia screener, progress tests in English, maths and science, a cognitive abilities assessment and also a handwriting assessment. Each of these assessments generates an individual report detailing the students results.

Places will only be offered following agreement with the commissioning organisation.
