Mathematics

At River Tyne Academy Gateshead, we believe that mathematics is an essential life skill that enables young people to understand the world, solve problems and make informed decisions. Our Mathematics curriculum is designed to develop confidence, resilience and fluency, ensuring that all pupils can achieve success and apply their learning in meaningful, real-life contexts.

We recognise that many of our learners may have experienced interruptions to their education or developed barriers to learning mathematics. Our curriculum is therefore carefully sequenced and adapted to meet individual needs, helping pupils rebuild confidence, address gaps in knowledge and make strong progress from their starting points.

Through engaging and purposeful learning experiences, pupils develop a secure understanding of key mathematical concepts across number, algebra, ratio, geometry, statistics and probability. We encourage learners to think critically, reason logically and apply their mathematical knowledge to solve a range of practical and theoretical problems.

A key focus of our curriculum is developing mathematical fluency. Through regular practice and structured support, pupils strengthen their understanding of core concepts and learn to apply them with increasing independence and accuracy. We also place great importance on mathematical reasoning, helping pupils explain their thinking, justify their answers and communicate using appropriate mathematical language.

Mathematics at River Tyne Academy is designed to be relevant and purposeful. Pupils are encouraged to see the links between mathematics and everyday life, including money management, budgeting, measuring, interpreting data and understanding the mathematical skills required in the workplace. This helps learners recognise the value of mathematics beyond the classroom and prepares them for future education, employment and independent living.

We foster a positive learning environment where pupils are encouraged to take risks, embrace challenges and learn from mistakes. By developing perseverance and a growth mindset, learners build the confidence needed to tackle increasingly complex mathematical problems.

Preparing Pupils for the Future

Mathematics provides a foundation for success across a wide range of educational and career pathways. Whether progressing to further education, apprenticeships, training or employment, pupils develop transferable skills that support logical thinking, decision-making and problem-solving throughout their lives.

Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) and Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)

At River Tyne Academy Gateshead, we believe that PSHE and RSE are essential in preparing young people for life beyond school. Through a broad, inclusive and responsive curriculum, we equip pupils with the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to stay safe, make informed decisions, build positive relationships and contribute positively to society.

We recognise that many of our learners have experienced challenges that may have impacted their education, wellbeing and relationships. Our PSHE and RSE curriculum provides a safe, supportive environment where pupils can explore important issues, develop self-awareness and build the resilience needed to navigate life’s opportunities and challenges.

Our curriculum is designed to support pupils’ personal development, wellbeing and preparation for adulthood. It reflects both local and national priorities and responds to the needs of our pupils and wider community. Through engaging and age-appropriate learning, pupils develop the understanding and skills needed to become healthy, respectful and responsible citizens.

Supporting Personal Development

At River Tyne Academy, PSHE and RSE extend beyond the classroom. Through assemblies, enrichment activities, awareness campaigns, community projects and visits from external agencies, pupils are provided with meaningful opportunities to explore real-world issues and develop a wider understanding of society.

We work closely with safeguarding teams, families and external professionals to ensure pupils receive the support, guidance and information they need. Where appropriate, learners are signposted to specialist services and resources that can further support their wellbeing and personal development.

Preparing Pupils for Life

Our PSHE and RSE curriculum empowers pupils to understand themselves, value others and make positive contributions to society. By developing the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed for healthy, safe and successful lives, we prepare young people for their next steps in education, employment and adulthood.

At River Tyne Academy, we aim to ensure every pupil leaves with the confidence, resilience and understanding needed to thrive in an ever-changing world.
