At River Tyne Academy Gateshead, we believe that English is a powerful tool for communication, self-expression and understanding the world around us. Through reading, writing and spoken language, pupils develop the skills and confidence needed to succeed in education, employment and everyday life.
Our English curriculum is designed to inspire a love of language and literature while ensuring pupils develop the essential literacy skills required for future success. We have high expectations for all learners and support them to become confident readers, effective communicators and thoughtful writers.
Through the study of a diverse range of texts, pupils explore different perspectives, cultures and experiences. They are encouraged to think critically, ask questions and engage with themes that help them better understand themselves and the world around them. Reading plays a central role in our curriculum, helping pupils develop knowledge, empathy and cultural awareness while fostering a lifelong appreciation of literature.
Developing strong communication skills is a key priority. Pupils are given regular opportunities to participate in discussions, presentations and debates, helping them build confidence, articulate their ideas and listen respectfully to the views of others.
We recognise that many of our learners may have experienced interruptions to their education or require additional support with literacy. Our curriculum is carefully adapted to meet individual needs, providing targeted support and intervention where necessary. By building on prior learning and addressing gaps in knowledge, we help pupils make meaningful progress and achieve their full potential.
English also plays an important role in supporting pupils’ personal development. Through the study of literature, learners encounter a range of characters, experiences and viewpoints that encourage reflection, resilience, empathy and understanding. These experiences help pupils develop the confidence and character needed to navigate life’s challenges and opportunities.
We enrich learning through a range of experiences, including theatre visits, live performances, author studies and creative projects, bringing literature to life and broadening pupils’ cultural experiences.
Through exploring diverse texts and perspectives, pupils gain a deeper understanding of different cultures, experiences and communities, helping them become respectful and active citizens.
Through English, we aim to empower every pupil to find their voice, develop a love of learning and leave River Tyne Academy equipped with the skills and confidence to succeed in their next steps.
