Wellbeing

At River Tyne Academy Gateshead, we recognise the strong connection between wellbeing and a student’s ability to learn. When young people feel safe, supported, and understood, they are far more able to engage with education and make meaningful progress.

Many of our students face a range of barriers that can affect their emotional, mental, and physical wellbeing. Despite this, they continue to show resilience, determination, and a genuine desire to learn. We are committed to ensuring that these strengths are recognised and nurtured through a supportive and responsive approach to education.

A Whole-Child Approach

We believe that effective learning can only take place when wellbeing is prioritised. For this reason, care and curriculum are closely linked within our practice. We understand that students may struggle to learn if they are feeling anxious, unwell, overwhelmed, or disconnected, and we respond to these needs with sensitivity and flexibility.

Our approach is centred on the whole child, ensuring that each student feels:

  • Safe and emotionally secure.
  • Valued and respected as an individual.
  • Supported in their learning and personal development.
  • Connected to trusted adults and positive relationships.

Wellbeing in Practice

Wellbeing is embedded across all aspects of school life at River Tyne Academy Gateshead. We work closely with students, families, and external professionals to provide consistent support that meets individual needs. This may include tailored pastoral support, personalised learning approaches, and access to wider services where appropriate.

We recognise that wellbeing is not an additional element of education, but a foundation for it. By prioritising emotional and mental health alongside academic progress, we create an environment where students are better able to engage, achieve, and thrive.

Our Commitment

We are committed to fostering a culture where every young person is seen, heard, and supported. Through strong relationships, a compassionate approach, and high expectations, we aim to ensure that all students can access learning in a way that supports both their wellbeing and their future success.

At River Tyne Academy Gateshead, we believe that when wellbeing is prioritised, true learning can take place.
